How Young Is Too Young For Braces?

By Ava Rogers

Self confidence of a child is closely linked to his/her appearance, and an early orthodontic treatment is, thus, known to be of great influence. Every 7 year old should undergo an evaluation by a certified orthodontist. For the benefit of the child, this should be evaluated as soon as possible. The treatment not only promises a better current dental condition, but also a better maturity of the jaw and new teeth, in the future.

A female orthodontist, certified by the board believes in treating the orthodontist problems early in life as she has observed exemplary transformations in the children treated by her. In her treatment she makes use of various modern methods with state of the art braces. At the first stage a child is subjected to a thorough examination which tells if there is a requirement of an orthodontic treatment. The treatment is started if some dental or growth concerns are observed in the child.

Braces are more or less a part of most treatments, with a seldom use of expanders or other tools. The course, on an average, lasts between 9 months to up to a year. After this period, the patient is rid of all the attachments and given retainers. Following this, the patient is required to visit the orthodontist for retainer adjustments, as well as for determining if any more treatment is warranted.

For this, several guidelines can be really helpful. There has to be made available sufficient space for the normal eruption of permanent teeth. Precaution needs to be taken to prevent the occurrence of a bad bite in a healthy mouth. To make the jaws grow in a desirable direction, guidance should be provided. It strives to minimize the trauma risk for the beyond extended teeth.

'Bad' oral habits, like sucking of thumb, need to be corrected. The lips are made to meet better. When it comes to such a bad habit as thumb sucking, you are risking the development of a gap in between the teeth. As early as at age 7, this habit can be stopped, open bite can be taken care of, gap can be closed, and upper jaw can be widened, by placement of a tool in a patient's mouth. And with this the child can expect his remaining enduring teeth to form in a much better way.

People suffering from a problem of under bite are bound to damage their upper and/or lower teeth. The associated potential problems include speech problems as well as crowding, latter of which hampers the normal growth of permanent teeth. Use of braces, at an early age of 8, totally removes the problem of cross bite, making room for comfortable eruption and proper alignment of the teeth. The resulting bite protects the teeth from future damage, improves the speech and blesses the patient with a nicer smile.

If the upper and lower jaws grow at separate times then the upper teeth seems to be popping out. Such thing mostly happens when the lower jaw is left behind. During the early stages of life it is possible to give directions to the development of jaws. In such cases a patient bites the roof of his mouth leading to constant irritation.

The self esteem and natural smile of a person is hampered because of a bucked teeth. The use of special appliance and braces can help in proper alignment of the lower jaw with respect to the upper jaw. Such a position improves smile, eliminates the problem of overbite which in turn gives the patient great sense of moral boost by increasing his self esteem. The present and future dental condition is taken care of by the treatment.
