Essential Guide To Starting Your Paralegal Career

by Alex Sam Maverick

A career in law is definitely exciting. But if you feel you're not ready financially or in some other aspects, going on a paralegal certificate program is a good decision. Paralegals work alongside lawyers, offering administrative or clerical support to the latter. They are an essential component of a practice's workforce delegated with often routine tasks which allow the firm to function like clockwork.

While the job description of paralegals varies among countries and employers, they are most definitely not allowed to give legal advice, setting legal fees and accept or represent a client in court. Their tasks may include researching appropriate laws and legal articles as well as preparing written reports. They may also be assigned to manage files, financial office records and case documents for safekeeping and easy retrieval. In other law firms, making preliminary versions of agreements are also part of a paralegal's job description. Entry-level paralegals are assigned multiple routine assignments. As they gain years of experience, they are usually given less menial jobs and more responsibility.

There are four ways on how one can go into the paralegal career. Most colleges offer paralegal programs that lead to a certificate, associate or bachelor's degree. Those who finished a bachelor's degree of a non-legal background may also apply for a paralegal certificate provided they have at least a year's experience as a legal assistant and at least 15 semester hours of legal assistant courses. Third, is to get an on-the-job training in a law firm. A paralegal certificate program online is another option which you can pursue without leaving your current employment. Paralegal certificate programs online also cost less compared to those offered by their conventional counterparts. It would be to your advantage to finish the course in an accredited institution. In the United States, the American Bar Association or ABA is the professional body which recognizes both programs and the institution providing them. Do your homework before committing to any school. The best resources about a program's educational standing will be the opinions of previous students and the legal community.

In most countries, certification is not mandatory to pursue a paralegal career. You should know however that at present employers are more inclined to take in and retain those with paralegal certificates. At the same time, those with such credential often get paid higher. Salaries for paralegals also depend on the location, kind and size of the organization where they are working.

Entry-level paralegal usually earn $40,000 per year, but with years of experience and specialization can earn twice as much. They also receive overtime pay and other bonuses.Indeed, a career path in paralegal services can provide you a stable income. Whether you proceed to law, or become an indispensable paralegal is entirely up to you.
