How to earn extra money freelancing

by Brian Rocheele

If you have an in-demand skill that you can do online then freelancing could be for you. You get work by bidding for projects on sites like odesk and Guru along with other freelancers and the employer selects the person they want to work with. However sometimes hundreds of freelancers apply for the same job, how can you stand out from the crowd?

Any time you apply for a project you have to say in a few words why you should be selected. It's really important that in the application you use proper English and grammar, nothing puts off prospective employers like bad spelling! I suppose it just looks like you have no attention to detail.

It's a fact that most of the freelancers on sites like Elance and Guru are not native English speakers. If you are though you have a big advantage as you're going to be able to communicate much easier with the employer, so make sure you mention this in your bid. In fact mention it in the opening line!

It's shocking how many freelancers bid on projects without even reading the project notes. I suppose they are just playing the numbers game and hoping they will get a project at some point. So it's important in your application that you mention some specific detail of the project and how you would tackle it, this shows you are genuinely interested.

It can be really difficult to set a price for your services on the freelancing sites because when you're starting out you may have to charge less than you'd like. However remember that once you do get a good reputation your prices do need to reflect your worth.

Many freelancers forget that they need to be constantly training in new skills in order to make any real money. If your sector is too crowded then you may want to get into something else. Finding a new skill can be difficult but whether you're a Google expert or a programming genius there's work out there!

I hope these tips help if you're trying to earn money with freelancing. I suppose my main tip is perseverance as building a solid reputation is a key factor in getting regular work.
