Just like cable TV, it can often de difficult to know whether the deal that you are getting with your cable internet is giving you the best possible results. Whilst the cable internet providing company will always advertise the theoretic maximum speed of the service that they are offering, in reality, customers will very rarely achieve the maximum speeds. There are many reasons why the actual internet speed may be lower than the theoretic maximum speed, but it is not always unavoidable, so here, you will learn a few tips and tricks to help you to configure your connection in order to get the best possible speed when using the cable internet.

Noticing a dramatic reduction in interest speed after a duration of faster connection speeds cannot only be frustrating and annoying, but it can waste time and means that you are not getting the most out of your service. You should not simply wait for these slow downs in connection speed to go away, but follow a few troubleshooting steps in order to help you to rectify the problem and get your internet connection performing quickly again.

First of all, you should search on the internet for a cable internet speed tester. There are many of these available and should be completely free. You do not even need to install any additional software in order to use them as they are run directly from within your internet browser. The tester will tell you the actual download and upload speeds that you are getting. If these are significantly lower than your contract's speeds with your provider, you should contact the customer services department of your cable internet provider and explain to them the problem that you are having, as well as quoting the actual speeds that you are getting. Often the providers will already know of any problems in your area such as maintenance work or cut cables, which could be causing problems not just for your connection, but also other subscribers to the same provider in your area.

Unfortunately if this is the case, all you can do is find out when the provider expects to get the work completed. Sometimes, if the problem is isolated to your connection only, there could be a problem with your internet hardware such as your modem or the cable to your home, so in this case, the cable internet provider should be able to send you an engineer to fix the problem.

Another reason for drops in speed could be as a result of many of us in your building the usage of the same cable internet connection. If you have 3 computers in your home as an example who are all the usage of the same cable internet service, you should notice a dramatic drop in speed if the other two computers are viewing videos at the same time as you are trying to browse the internet, so make sure that you check with other internet users in your building to peer if they're the usage of huge portions of bandwidth.

One thing that often work is simply switching your cable router off at the plug socket, waiting about 30 seconds or so and then turning it back on. This will cause it to restart and you should notice an improvement in your cable internet speeds.

Finally, you should check to see if you can use other things on your computer as well as the internet at a comfortable speed. If you are finding that the entire computer is lagging, you may want to use disk cleaning, virus scanning and update programs. If your computer is still performing slowly, you could reinstall your operating system or if the system is particularly old, consider purchasing a new computer that can offer you better performance.
