LCD Displays That Save On Energy

by Alex Stein

The wonderful world of liquid crystal display (LCD displays) is one that is taken for granted. Many people do not realize that over a century of technological advances have been incorporated to develop the flat panel TVs that are now stationed in homes across America.

Whether you are enjoying a movie, cable TV show, or a video game, your best bet will be to use this type of television. It requires little energy to run, lowering your electrical bill.

Over a century ago, Friedrich Reinitzer extracted cholesterol from carrots and discovered liquid crystals. Almost 50 years later, the first patents were laid out for the liquid crystals, and in the 1960s, these were found to have electromagnetic properties. The history of this form of technology has developed slowly, but each development phase over the years has become more efficient, less costly, and better advanced.

Rather than using the tubes as a traditional television, the liquid crystals require external light to illuminate onto the screen. The earliest versions used a fluorescent lights behind the panel to help the crystals activate on the screen. Today, LED lights compile a series of blue, green and red sets of pixels that reflect the lights that create the pictures you see today.

There are many different pros and cons to using this type of television. Some of the pros include low power use, compact design, lightweight, and no distortion in geometric forms on the television screen. Along with these, the display does not carry a high voltage when being repaired as traditional televisions do.

Cons of the TV are simple. Though they may sound harsh, they truly are merely aspects that you should know about. There may be a chance that you would have to deal with a dead pixel or two. This can happen over the years of having the TV, where the pixels wear out. However, it can happen while being produced at the factory. If this is the case, get in touch with the manufacturer to see what you can have done for a replacement.

LCD displays are one of the greatest inventions that have taken over 100 years to develop. From the time that Friedrich Reinitzer discovered the liquid crystals to the large flat paneled televisions in homes today, each of the display systems have become a threshold to the household. Find out how this type of television can change your viewing experience for a lifetime.
