One of the basics of having an online business is getting traffic to your website or offer, and the foundation of getting traffic is targeting the right keywords. Google is known the biggest search engines and as such it know better than anyone else what phrases are searched. And the good thing is anyone can use free Google keywords tool.

Before establishing your keyword list you have to identify the niche you're going to target. Once you know that, you can than start by using a basic phrase associated with your niche. The keyword tool when then offer you suggestions on some other possible keywords.

When using keyword tool you need to be aware od some settings. Broad, exact, and phrase are the three types of match types. For each matching type you will find pros and cons.

Broad match, as the name implies, will give you most results. So when you search for the term cheap golf balls you can get results that include any of the three words: golf, balls, or cheap.

With broad match you will not automatically get targeted prospects on your site. You will normally get a great deal of traffic, but it won't be targeted and it will not likely bring you a lot of sales.

Exact match means that you'll receive visitors that are looking for the exact keyword you target. So to use the example above, if you are using the exact match feature for that keyword Cheap Golf Balls that is precisely what you'll get, which could normally result in less traffic though the traffic you get could be more targeted, and that is the best.

The overall rule of thumb is that you need a keyword that has a lot of searches but not a lot of competition. What constitutes a 'lot' will vary depending on the methods you're using to get traffic.

You'll have to figure out on your own what are the parameters will be for your specific niche. It might take a little trial and error when you're first starting out.

No matter what type of traffic generation you are using online, you will need a good list of keywords. Pay Per Click, Search Engine Optimization, Article Marketing, etc. will all start with you doing your homework and gather a lot of great keywords to target.

One of the best parts of having an online business is that a lot of the tools you need to succeed are free to use. You may reasonably start a business online even if you don't have any money at all. All you really need is access to Internet connected computer and the will to be successful.
